Feeling The Squeeze

Answering the question, "Where is God for those who are being squeezed by the pain and pressure of loneliness, confusion, and a fear of the future?"

This is supposed to be the most wonder-full time of the year, celebrating Christmas with everything we enjoy in our family and traditions. For many this year, it may not be so easy to sing along with beloved seasonal tunes such as "Joy to the World". This is understandable given the difficulty of the times we are in, for this is being written during the holiday season of one the toughest years the nation has faced in recent memory.

 

Many people are worried about the economy, about safety, and about the future. They are "feeling the squeeze" financially, morally, and across many aspects of life along physical and spiritual lines. In times like these that we are experiencing now, the veneer of civilization -- which is always very thin -- begins to wear away. At the extremes we have increasing suicides, murders, violent crimes, and robberies. More commonly though, people reveal their inner fears and feelings through anger, tears, and mixed expressions of frustration and anxiety. Above all of this, however, is one thought that might stay hidden, "Where is God in all of this?"

The fact is, "God is where He always is. He has not gone away nor has He turned His back on His people." When the pressure's on, when we're feeling the squeeze, God wants us to look to Him. Now, at first our motivation in turning to God is to have the pressure relieved. He desires that as well; But He wants more than that for us! God wants to use the circumstances around us to help us face the sinful reality that lurks in our hearts. It's not that He want to punish us, but He wants to cleanse our hearts so that we might know the true joy and happiness that Jesus came to bring to us.

Jesus, the Babe in the manger, grew up to be the Man who died on the Cross of Calvary so that we could receive forgiveness, both eternal and temporal, and cleansing from our sins in this life and in the life to come. The trials in our lives are meant to reveal the contents of our hearts, and God is not as interested in what we did during the trials as He is in what we do about what was revealed about us through those trials. This includes the words that come out of our mouths, because our words reveal what is in our hearts. For "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45)."

While it is quite difficult to put trials in a positive light, God has promises to work all things together for good for those who love Him (read it in Romans 8:28). To see how He does this, consider gold. Unless gold has undergone the purification process it is impure, and if you want to purify gold, it must be subjected to periods of intense heat. This process forces the impurities that are embedded deep within the molecular makeup of the gold to rise to the top where they can be skimmed off and thrown away leaving behind only the pure gold. Without this process the gold would not be nearly as valuable. For exposing the impure gold to the intense heat of purification is why it becomes one of our planet's most sought after and valuable commodities. Even as natural heat purifies gold, the fiery trials purify our lives, but only if we will let them.

Consider also the amazing benefits of pressure. Have you ever given any thought to what it takes to produce a beautiful diamond? In case you do not already know, diamonds start out as mere chunks of carbon (for example, coal). In order to change carbon into a beautiful and very expensive diamond, it must first be exposed for many years to intense pressure. Simply put, it is the combination of exposing carbon to intense pressure for long periods of time that transforms it into beautiful and extremely valuable diamonds.

So many believers cut short the process of God's changing their lives for His glory when they succumb to the temptation to self medicate by running from the pain of the procedure. Running can be anything from picking up the phone and calling a friend when we are suffering instead of going to God first, distracting ourselves or attempting to subdue our pain with television programming, food, alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription medications, shopping sprees, or any other of a long list of escape-isms. You must remember that as a Christian, the pain that brings transformation into your life is not only your ally but your friend, without which it would be impossible to become what God predestined and desires you to be.

You may remember a popular song that Steve Camp wrote and recorded in the 1980s where a particular line in the lyrics says, "And though the trials never end, I've learned to take them as my friends." Steve had apparently learned the liberating value of being subjected to the transforming pain of the heat and pressure that God so often uses to refine our lives. Can you see why trials and tribulations play such a key role in our becoming Christ like in nature? Pressure promotes growth and fire purifies when they are administered to those who diligently seek God to transform them into Christ's likeness. Such are beautiful and priceless in His sight!

So whenever we are confronted with pain, suffering, or unpleasant circumstances, the first thing we should do is turn to God. As James said, "Humble yourselves in the sight of The Lord, and He shall lift you up (James 4:10)." When we submit ourselves humbly to God, we can then resist the devil and he will flee from us. Even so, first things first is the rule here. We must submit to God, including accepting His correction in order that we may be changed more and more into His likeness.

Take joy in knowing that God loves you and that is why He is there, walking with you through the trial. Know also that the strength we receive from the joy of The Lord is essential for dealing with the trials of this life. For, contrary to what many wish fervently were not the case, suffering is a part of our mortal existence. Nevertheless, when we think God's thoughts and see things His way, we gain His perspective on trials and temptations. When we do, our happiness is preserved.

"But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled (1 Peter 3:14)."

"Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of The Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of The Lord; that The Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy (James 5:10-11)."

Whenever the trials of life come upon us, we would do well to remember the testimony of Job, because we have an advantage over Job. We know that Satan is the accuser of the brethren, that he goes about seeking whom he may destroy, and we also know that Satan can do nothing without God's permission. So in the midst of the trials we can remember that God's intention is that we receive His blessing in and through those trials, because "we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28)."

"My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into diverse temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing (James 1:2-4)."

Trials are a necessary part of being a child of God. The fact that our Father allows them should not make us sad or angry, because, "Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of The Almighty (Job 5:17)." While not all trials are The Lord's chastisement, both chastening and trials are used by God to work the character of Christ into our souls.

Significantly, the pleasures of sin are short-lasting and lead to long-term suffering, while the pain-filled trials of godliness are short-term and lead to everlasting happiness. As James wrote, "the trying of your faith worketh patience" but only if we "let patience have her perfect work." Why? When we let patience have her perfect (that is, complete) work, then we will be complete, wanting nothing (the word wanting means lacking).

Remember, when things seem like they cannot get any worse, when it feels like your whole world is crashing down around you, lift up your heads, lift up your hands and "Make a joyful noise to The Lord, all ye lands. Serve The Lord with gladness: come before His presence with singing. Know ye that The Lord He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanks-giving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His Name. For The Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations (Psalm 100:1-5)."

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful (Colossians 3:15)."

Times are tough, but God is nearer than we think. Let Him comfort you. Our deepest desire is that you have found some hope, encouragement, and motivation in this message. Wisdom Not Just For Wednesday

Where do YOU run, when trials of life come?

As you can see is the basis of many of our posts and podcasts, no matter what trials we are up against, we are NOT gonna let the little devil distract us from the HUGE and LIVING GOD, Who can resolve whatever we go through and even redeem it to our advantage. But, we had to first learn that we must run to Him when those trials of life come.

Our rejecting the lies of the devil and running INto God enables God to do miracles in our lives that are tremendous!  “For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life. But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God. My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me. Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake. ” (Psalm 31:13-16)

One of the greatest truths we have learned through our pursuit of walking in oneness with God is, as God's written Word says it best, “Blessed is the man that trusts in The Lord, and whose hope The Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)

The PROSPEROUS SOUL "Are you 'Well done' or half-baked?"

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." (3 John 2)

  

  Do you realize that God's Holy Word tells us that one of the tribes of the nation of Israel was half-baked? Hosea, one of God's preachers of the Old Testament, said, "Ephraim is a cake not turned." (Hosea 7:8) What does he mean by that? If you don't understand the meaning, could the same thing be said about you? Well, let's see if we can shed some light on this matter.

       Let's take a look at what God's Word says to us in the letter of 3 John 2, "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." God's number one wish for us is that we be prosperous. Note though, while He wants us to have material and physical prosperity, He tells us that those things depend upon the condition of our soul, saying, "...even as thy soul prospereth." So, what does God mean by a "prosperous soul"? A prosperous soul is one that is transformed out of the corruption of our old flesh nature, into the new nature that is like Jesus - filled with love, joy, peace, and all things good!

       So how do we go about getting a prosperous soul? Jesus summed it up with this command, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness." (Matthew 6:33) What does this mean? A related Scripture explains that answer this way, "let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith." (Hebrews 12:1,2) So, we get a soul that is prosperous by being conformed to the image of Christ is a process in which we have accepted responsibilities that God assigned to us, for our good. Furthermore, as we run this race of faith, this passage reminds us to keep our focus upon Jesus, because God never intends for us to run this race alone.

       But what if we don't lay aside the sin? What if we don't keep our focus upon the Lord? What if we try to sit down instead of continuing on in the race? Is God going to let us get away with that? No, as the passage continues, we find, "My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth." (Hebrews 12:5,6) Notice that it does not say, "For whom the Lord 'is ANGRY' He chasteneth." God is clear that those whom He LOVES are those whom He chastens, or to whom He gives correction or discipline. And that, my friend, applies to You.

       How does God chasten us? God will often use the unique circumstances in our life, as well as the consequences we encounter as a result of our individual life choices. The Scriptures use the word "fire" to demonstrate these experiences. Most believers do not realize just how important God made the role of fire to be, in helping His children grow and develop in their potential. Jesus promised, "...He (Jesus) shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire." (Luke 3:16) However, many people have the mistaken notion that becoming a Christian means the end of their earthly problems. They believe that the Christian life is supposed to be characterized by absence of trials. This is directly opposite of God's plan.

       Isn't it ironic that many people decide to get saved out of their fear of suffering in the fires of Hell?! They think that becoming a Christian is their way OUT of pain and anguish - like an eternal fire insurance policy. Instead, from the time we become saved and a Christian, we find ourselves in a place of having fire *assurance*. In other words, you can be *assured* that, almost from the moment you become saved, you will experience fire in your life, and pain and suffering from the fiery resistance being levelled against you in this life on earth.

       Although fiery trials and the suffering that accompany them, often come by the unwise choices of our old flesh nature or of the old flesh nature of someone else, God redeems them for our good, because He loves us. When we, as Christians, don’t understand this, we often ask God for relief from our trials, suffering, and the circumstances of unwise choices (our own or someone else's). This is often a major source of frustration for many of God's people because their priorities focus on getting relief while God's priorities focus on making us into a "new, Christ-natured" person. The fact is, we must learn to rejoice in knowing God is lovingly redeeming our old ways of life, so we benefit and grow from the trials and suffering they bring.

       Now, to explain what God meant by using the term "half-baked", He was trying to heal His people, but they would not let Him. They did not turn to Him when the trials came, so they, as a cake not turned, became burned on one side instead of being cooked throughout, evenly. They were half-baked. The only way to avoid being half-baked is to turn toward God even more, when the heat is on. That means, when we find ourselves in the midst of a fiery trial, our best results will come by facing it with full focus on God, our Redeemer. Satan, of course, will try to meddle in the process by tempting us to avoid the trial, or to attempt to quench the fire.

       There are many ways people try quenching the fire, seeking to find relief from its heat: turning to TV, alcohol, self-medication, divorce, job-change, church-hopping, shopping, moving, and many other spontaneous and harmful situations. Those are simply ways of trying to avoid the inevitable event of facing the truth. This is how God's people responded, and God said they were "half-baked". They wouldn't turn to Him and be healed.

       Notice that God's motivation in using the fiery trials was for the benefit of His children. The chastening is "for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness." (Hebrews 12:10) God uses our trials to chasten us because He loves us, not because He is angry with us. If we respond properly, then we profit, and prosper, from the benefits, "afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby." (Hebrews 12:11)

       Is every trial we experience the chastening of God? Certainly not. The important point, however, is that God's bride will be purified by fire, as Isaiah 48:10 explains, "Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction."

       The Apostle Paul described the trials and sufferings that afflicted him as, "That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death." (Philippians 3:10) Paul realized that his suffering was teaching him more about Christ Jesus, helping him to become more like Him. God wants us to realize that we have the choice to resist or accept His intension of using our trials in our lives to bring us closer to Him. To accept, is to make us "new" and more like Him. Rather than being half-baked, God wants His servants "Well done".

       When we stand in the fiery trials of pursuing NEW LIFE IN Christ, we allow them to do their perfect work, so we will one day be able to hear the sweetest of sounds, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:21a)

"I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayest see." (Revelation 3:18)
