We're Bringing Back Testimony Time

"See flipcard titles"
A must-read for exposing all Christians to the most effective tool for winning the lost and increasing the faith of believers in Jesus Christ! --Keith, Brenda, and the TTM Team

One Sunday morning when I was about eight years old, our family was sitting in our usual pew in the sanctuary of Rosemont Road Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, VA. As we were quietly waiting for our pastor to begin the morning service, I began what had been my custom leading up to the service. As usual, I asked my mother for an ink pen so I could scribble on the back page of a church bulletin as I waited for Dad to give me his "It's time to stand and sing the first hymn" nudge on the arm.
As we were standing up and beginning to sing, I can remember thinking, as I often had, how predictable the order of the morning services always were. Rarely, if ever, did the order of the morning service change. On this particular morning, however, things for me and my life would be changed forever.

After the choir had led us in a few songs, we were asked to be seated. The pastor stood up from his high-backed chair that was prominently positioned on the platform and walked up to the lectern. He smiled, looked across the congregation, and said something we hadn't heard him say before, "This morning we are introducing something new here at Rosemont Road Baptist, and it's called 'Testimony Time'." After he said that, I can remember thinking to myself, "What is a 'testimony'?"

Our pastor began to explain, "Starting today, at each Sunday service, after the choir has led us in singing, I will be offering everyone in our congregation the opportunity to stand and share how God has answered your prayers during the previous week." He then asked, "Is there someone who would like to be the first one to stand up and tell your testimony with the congregation, sharing something that God has done in your life? If so, just raise your hand."

It may sound a bit melodramatic but I began feeling a kind-of anxious anticipation swirling around in the pit of my stomach. The sensation was one that I would never have equated to what someone might experience in The Church. The closest thing I could relate to that feeling was, on Christmas eve, when I was four or five years old, the anticipation of joy and fun of Christmas Day.

Before the experience of this day happened, I had not so much as heard anyone even insinuate that God is really real. Just as curious to me was hearing the idea that God actually responds to a person when they pray. That morning, God would use a brave few who shared personal testimonies to reveal to me "the most effective tool" that we, in God's Church Family, could ever use for winning the lost and encouraging believers in The LORD Jesus Christ!

Upon the pastor's extending the opportunity for someone to share their testimony, several hands went up. Words cannot express how excited I felt to see people raising their hands. I was eager to hear what those who were about to testify would say about how God answers when we pray. With my heart filled with expectation, I fixed my eyes on our pastor to see who he would call on first.

Our pastor pointed to a gentlemen who then stood up and very humbly began sharing how God had answered his prayers just a few days earlier that week. I listened in awe as he shared how he had been going through difficult times financially. The man's voice began to crack as he told us how he and his family had come into such difficult times that he did not have money that weekend to buy bread or milk to feed his family. He went on to share how, out of utter desperation, he fell to his knees and called out to God for help, praying specifically, desperately, for God to help him to get food for his family."

The next words I heard come by the gentleman's voice led me to realize that a heart of brokenness is the principal thing that Jesus Christ can use, and this is the point where He set His hook in my heart for the rest of my life. I heard the gentleman share that, the very next morning, opening his front door with a plan to go out and find someone or some way that might bring help for him and his family, he was greeted with a paper bag sitting on his front porch. He said that he looked around at the houses of nearby neighbors but didn't find anybody in sight. Then he said he slowly leaned down to look what was inside the bag. He said, "When I saw what was in the bag, I wanted to jump up and down and shout with joy! On my doorstep, in a regular paper bag, I found a loaf of bread, a carton of milk, and a five dollar bill!" My heart felt as if it would leap out of my chest. God had actually answered that man's prayer! I had never heard, nor felt in my heart, anything like that before. It literally felt like my chest had been flooded with perfectly-warm water.

After that first gentleman had finished sharing how God answered his prayer, the others who had raised their hands stood and shared their testimonies too, one after another. Each one had actual, real-life accounts of God's answers to personal prayers. One man explained how he and his wife prayed, asking God to help him find a better-paying job that was closer to their home, and God answered their prayer. Another church member stood and shared how she was in need of a new place to live and how God had provided the answer to her prayer.

Our family had been attending that same church for several years by this time. We had heard our pastor preach lots of Sunday morning sermons, but this was our first experience with "testimony time". This was when it dawned on me that none of the very good sermons our pastor had preached ever ‘won’ my heart to Jesus Christ like hearing those precious church folks, with heartfelt conviction, share how Jesus Christ responded to their calling out to Him in prayer.

What joy it was that flooded my heart that day! Hearing those testimonies changed me like nothing I had experienced before. I realized that God is real! My heart was won to Jesus Christ because I heard real-life testimonies! Listening to those precious believers give actual accounts of our Lord and Savior's love for, and involvement in, our day-to-day lives forever welded my heart to The Holy Trinity. Though I could not see our Father, Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit with my natural eyes, I knew I had just "met my Family" that is closer to me in the spirit than those who were physically sitting next to me in the church pew.

By the time we left the church that day, a paradigm shift occurred in my heart. The "distant" God that I had only heard mentioned on certain occasions, that I had always thought of as far, far away, had now become "realer than real". Suddenly, unexpectedly, The LORD God became close at hand and had begun to reveal Himself to me, personally. And this was only the beginning of my "Life" as a Believing Believer in Jesus Christ.

Ever since that Sunday morning in 1963, I've witnessed over and over and over again how a Believer's testimony is the most effective tool for winning people to Jesus Christ. Since that day, until now, I've not witnessed anything more effective at increasing our faith like sharing our spoken and written accounts of God's, Jesus Christ's, and The Holy Spirit's personal involvement in our lives. As we press forward, continually setting out each day to challenge and encourage our fellow believers by sharing our testimonies, we want to remember to stay vigilant that we don't miss the mark along the way. In our experience, if Satan and his minions can use "roadblocks" against us in their wicked attempts to hinder us or, if possible, derail us in our mission to deliver "the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:9-11)” into the ears of any- and every- one that we speak to, they will.

One of Satan's favorite roadblocks, sadly a very effective weapon, is distracting believers, especially the spiritually-young believers, away from regularly telling their testimonies. We can see how crucially important the practice of "telling our personal testimonies" is, but we must be intentional to "realize what our testimonies are and gather them with The LORD" first. The devil's ploys work to induce "the testator" with "spiritual amnesia" when it comes to recalling the wonder-full things that God has done in their life. This, in turn, results in greatly hindering, or the outright theft of, the potent seed of the testator's testimony. Satan's ultimate objective is to stop that seed from getting access to, and taking root in, fertile soil of a hearer's heart.

There is a second weapon of Satan that we need to be sure our fellow believers are aware of. Satan will deploy the wicked spirits of intimidation and fear "to discourage" us, or "to steal our courage" from us, for the purpose of hindering our testimonies from making their way into a hearer's or reader's heart. As you well know, in these tumultuous times, we must be especially bold where sharing our testimonies with others is concerned. We must also be diligent to invest in the lives of those whom we sow "the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:9-11)”. This nurture is crucial for us to assist in the life of a new brother or sister in Jesus Christ.

When we find ourselves being attacked by this third favorite roadblock of Satan, as happens more commonly, hearing Satan's lying devils of intimidation and fear yelling in our spirit's ear, we are particularly fond of this wonderful Scripture in The Proverbs, chapter 28 and verse 1. The verse reads, "The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion (Proverb 28:1)." There is a stark difference between an "unbelieving-believer" and a "Believing Believer". When it comes to sharing what God has done in their life, the "unbelieving-believer" is often apathetic and quick to avoid sharing their testimony, while the "Believing Believer" is most often "bold as a lion" and quick to share, passionately, the things God has done in their life, to magnify Jesus Christ in the hearers' hearts.

There are many stories of heroic believers written throughout The Holy Bible, God's written Word. Perhaps the most popular story is the heroism and righteous boldness in the account of David going up against, and defeating, Goliath, the Philistine giant. On that note, we would like to offer a rather profound observation that we recently heard a pastor share about David's "rock-solid faith" and "lion-like boldness".

Just before going to stand up to the giant Philistine, Goliath, David went to a nearby river bed and, The Bible tells us in 1 Samuel 17, he chose "five" smooth stones to take with him. So, if David truly knew in his heart of hearts, without any doubt whatsoever, that God was about to deliver him a decisive victory over the giant Goliath, then why would he gather "five" stones for his sling if he would only need “one” for Goliath? The reason is, knowing that Goliath would not be alone, David gathered enough stones to take down Goliath AND his four brothers! Now THAT'S the way a "Believing Believer" thinks!

It is our heartfelt desire that this blog will help challenge and encourage our ministry friends and family to "encourage" Christian brothers and sisters you come into contact with to recall and share their testimonies as well for the purpose of "winning souls". "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that wins souls is wise (Proverb 11:30)." Please let us know if there is any way we can assist in your personal campaign to "Brag on God, Jesus Christ, and the wonder-full Holy Spirit".

WE’RE BRINGING BACK “TESTIMONY TIME”! It’s the time for us to resolve in our hearts that, without a shadow of a doubt, "There is nobody and nothing worth our relationship with Jesus Christ!"

If you have not given your heart and life to God in Jesus Christ, or if you’ve fallen away from your pursuit of oneness in Him, pray this prayer, RELAX, and watch what God will do...

"Dear Father God, in the precious Name of Jesus Christ, the King of kings and the Lord of all lords, I lay my life at Your Feet. I come before You, confessing that I am a sinner, and I ask for You to forgive me of all my sins - those that I know I have committed, as well as those that I am not even aware of.  I ask that You come into my heart and be my Lord. I lay my life, and everything in it, at Your Feet, and ask that You please take me and begin to change me to be like YOU. I ask that You redeem the time that has passed, and allow me the opportunity to become exactly what You have predestined me to be, from before the foundation of the earth. I commit my life to You now, and thank You for receiving me as Your own. In the wonderful Name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, I pray, Amen."  And AMEN!!!

Winning The Lost ... Count The Cost In Truth In Love!

Beloved, let us love one another: for Love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knows God. He that loveth not knows not God; for God IS LOVE (1 John 4:7-8)."

Christ Jesus explained Love to His Disciple known as "doubting Thomas" in John 14:5-6 saying, “Thomas said unto Him, Lord, we know not whither Thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus said unto him (Thomas) I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life: no man cometh unto The Father, but by Me." The more our personal relationship with Christ Jesus grows, so does our becoming one with The Godhead, and Three-In-One Holy Trinity. We must pursue The Lord God with all diligence, not for what He can give us but for Who He IS, not for what's in His Hand but for what's in His Heart!
In order for us to successfully love people, we must first love ourselves. If we don't love ourselves in the way God Loves us, looking through His Eyes, all we will be able to do is perpetuate a false show of love, which is not love at all... it's manipulation. It is really an attempt at receiving from people, or from the arm of the flesh, what can only be received from God Himself.
Can you see why our own personal and intimate relationship with Christ Jesus and the Gospel He preached is key to our being able to win the lost God's Way? Misrepresentation of Father God and the Gospel of The Lord Jesus Christ is at the root of the Church's condition today. We have got to stop and realize that people are desperately craving more than a group of church-goers who've been put through a ten-step evangelism program for knowing how to march down the strip and hand out tracts on a busy Saturday night.
We live in a generation where multitudes of people have either made bad life choices or are from dysfunctional backgrounds, and they are desperately looking for God's Love. "Then saith He unto His disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth labourers into His harvest (Matthew 9:37-38)."
I don't mean these people are just looking for someone to love them "on occasion". God knows better than anyone, we already have way too much of that going on in the churches today. Because human love is being expressed much more than God's love, so many people leave Sunday services each week hurt and lonely rather than encouraged and truly appreciated. "Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain (Proverb 25:14)." Remember, the only love that will bring wholeness to a life is God's Love, and the only place that we can get God's love is from God Himself!
We have lots of good sermons being preached and lots of miracles taking place around the country, especially in Sunday services, but, frankly, there is not enough of God's Love being given away. As important as good preaching and sermons and miracles may be, they fall short of what Jesus calls each and every one of us to do in order to be seen as successful disciples in the eyes of God. We must be vessels for the distribution of God's Love to others, if we are going to be His disciples!
Jesus said, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another (John 13:34-35)." He could not have made it any clearer than that!
But just how do we "love"? Listen to the way Paul teaches us to love, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not Charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not Charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not Charity, it profits me nothing. Charity suffers long, and is kind; Charity envies not; Charity vaunts (boasts) not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil; Rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the Truth; Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Charity never fails: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is Perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass darkly; but then face-to-face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, Charity, these three; but the greatest of these is Charity (1 Corinthians 13:1-13)."
What people are desperately craving is to have someone who, truly knowing and showing the Love of Jesus Christ, will come up and rescue them from the chains in which they are bound. And, believe me, there are people everywhere praying for those who are Christ-like to emerge and prove to them that they are really loved by God! Paul said, "For the earnest expectation of the creature waits for the manifestation of the sons of God (Romans 8:19)."
What we do not need today are more evangelistic outreach programs being performed by people who do not know God personally. What we do need more Christ-likeness. "Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering (Colossians 3:12)." For those who claim to be Christians to start being Christ-like is all it would take.
Jesus gave us another key to winning the lost God's way when He said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me (John 12:32)." This not only applied to the time of His crucifixion, it also applies to us now, maybe even more.
You ask, "Keith, what do you mean?" Well, in order to make Jesus visible in the sight of other people, to those who are lost, the members of the Body of Christ must lift Him up in their own life and lifestyle, first. I like the phrase "magnify The Lord" because when we magnify Jesus, it means we make HIM big in the eyes of those who see Him small. We, individually, must magnify The Lord in the eyes of everyone with whom we come into contact.
When folks look at us they must see the Love of God in action. The only way that this can take place is by our being in partnership with God. For example, "Philip said unto Him (Jesus), Lord, show us The Father, and it suffices us. Jesus said unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip? he that hath seen Me hath seen The Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us The Father? Believest thou not that I am in The Father, and The Father in Me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself: but The Father that dwells in Me, He doeth the works (John 14:8-10)." It is our individual responsibility, being a believer in Christ Jesus, to take God's Love and the godly examples that our leaders in Christ have imparted to us, and practice them as an individual lifestyle, with Christ and in oneness with God.
Having said that, I must make this very important point on behalf of faithful leaders of churches everywhere. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the leadership's job to go out, by themselves, and win the lost. It is the leadership's job to be teachers and examples to the Body of Christ as they go out and win the lost. Sadly, this is not practiced in most established churches today. Sadly, the enemy appears to have been successful in convincing the congregations everywhere that, somehow, putting financial tithes and offerings into the offering plate during morning and/or evening services meets a responsibility they have that then removes their accountability to The Gospel when it comes to telling others about Christ Jesus. For any and every one who is in the Body of Christ, no matter what congregation you may be a member of, Jesus commands us to, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in The Name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen (Matthew 28:19-20)." How can we go into all the world and teach all nations? If the job is left up to only a few faithful leaders in our churches, we can't! Each and every one of us has the responsibility to do the work, and not any one of us is exempt.
Take a listen to what Apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Ephesus concerning the leaders over believers in The Church. (Please read this very slowly.) "And He (Jesus)  gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the Body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of The Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the Truth in love, may grown up into Him in all things, which is The Head, even Christ: From Whom the whole Body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplies, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, makes increase of The Body unto the edifying of itself in love (Ephesians 4:11-16)."
You see, if we are going to be effective at winning the lost in these last days, we must do everything necessary to make sure that our partnership with God is strong! I once heard a very wise man say, "The best thing we can do to help the poor in this country is to not be one of them." That same thing applies where leading the lost in spiritual things is concerned.
We want to encourage you right now, pick up the phone and call someone to speak about life, real Life in Christ, letting that person know just how much they mean to The Lord and to His Church and to you. Make it your goal to befriend someone who is outside of the circle of friends you already have. Make it your goal to share with them the wonderful things that God has done in your life and how the results He brings, and has brought so many times, has blessed you in your life with Him. Watch how that also results in blessing the newly-befriended one... and you!
We encourage you to meet with the Person of The Holy Spirit in the pages of God's written Word, asking Him to help you develop an increase in your desire for befriending others. Ask Him to help you develop more of a w-a-n-t to let go of fleshly desires and worldly things so you can apply more of your attention and daily drive toward the increase of God's Love that fills your heart and life so that, as a result of your increased Oneness IN God, IN Jesus Christ, and IN Him (The Person of The Holy Spirit), you will have more of God's Love to pour out to others. Remember Revelation 12:11, "And they overcame him (the devil) by the Blood of The Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."
To become truly effective at winning the lost in these last days, we get to take and use these last opportunities, each day, to write down and share our testimony of doing everything we possibly can to strengthen our partnership with God, the most important partnership and relationship of all. Now, go win the lost God's Way, with God's Love! You never know when the current opportunity in front of you is the last opportunity you will have to introduce a person to Jesus Christ and The Heavenly Father. "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that wins souls is wise (Proverb 11:30)." We've got to reach out God's Way, to love the Way God does... winning the lost, God's Way! And, no matter what...
KEEP PRESSIN'IN!
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus gives us the starting place where it all must begin, "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God (the Kingdom that IS God), and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." And in Matthew 22:35-40 are the very keys we've got to pursue and possess for winning the lost, from Jesus Himself, "Thou shalt love The Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."  So, let's begin to love by looking through God's Eyes, by reaching out the way God does, and by... winning the lost, God's Way!

We couldn't do this without the help of our friends!
What you have just read is the final post of a 3-part blog message. This blog post, along with each of our original podcasts, music and video recordings, books, magazines, and other resources in our ministry collection, is made possible by the faithful prayer and financial support of the TTM Family of Sponsorship Partners. If you would like to become a part of the TTM Family, your monthly financial support of any amount will help toward fulfilling God's call on our lives to make Holy-Bible-based messages available to the churched and un-churched individuals alike. You are invited to partner with us in working with God to fulfill His desire for everybody to know Christ Jesus as He IS... The Way, The Truth, and The Life... personally. We will remain steadfast to "... press Toward The Mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14)." Would you consider helping us expand our outreach capabilities by becoming a monthly financial partner? Your support will help toward providing effective, practical outreach tools for ministering the love, truth, and salvation of Jesus Christ.

Help fan the flame in the hearts of those who are looking to increase in their faith, courage, and strength through Christ Jesus!  Give your tax-deductible gift today and help make more messages and resources like this possible!  Become a part of The Family of Toward The Mark, Inc. Sponsors.
